Meanwhile, on the same day, the National Assembly's Culture, Sports and Tourism Committee held a parliamentary inspection, where numerous criticisms were directed at the Korea Skating Union. Representative Yang Moon-seok strongly argued that the Skating Union should be designated as a managed organization and directly controlled by the Korean Sport & Olympic Committee. This proposal was put forward as a way to address the various problems that have recently surfaced within the Skating Union. Representative Yang believes that the Skating Union's own efforts to improve have been insufficient, and that stronger external intervention is needed. The parliamentary inspection involved in-depth discussions on the overall management of the Skating Union, with strong calls for reform.
The issue of disciplinary action against coach Yoon Jae-myung and Coach A in relation to the Skating Union was also raised. Although the Union disciplined them, Coach Yoon regained his position through a re-examination by the Korean Sport & Olympic Committee, and Coach A filed a court injunction to suspend the disciplinary action, which was granted. This situation has sparked controversy over the Skating Union's disciplinary decision-making process, raising questions about fairness and transparency. Park Se-woo, Managing Director of the Skating Union, cited discord with the team as the reason for not reinstating Coach A, emphasizing the importance of maintaining teamwork. However, some have criticized the Union's decision as unfair.
Furthermore, the confusion surrounding the appointment and dismissal of Kim Seon-tae, a director of the Skating Union, as the interim head coach of the short track national team was also pointed out during the parliamentary inspection. Kim's short tenure as head coach and subsequent dismissal caused several controversies, leading to criticism of the Skating Union's personnel management system. These series of events were cited as examples of the Skating Union's internal problems, emphasizing the need for reform and self-correction within the Union. The parliamentary inspection highlighted the need for improvements across the board in the Skating Union's operations and emphasized the importance of efforts to promote the development and fairness of the sports community.
The National Assembly's Culture, Sports and Tourism Committee also strongly condemned the issue of sexual violence in the sports community during the parliamentary inspection of the Korean Sport & Olympic Committee. Representative Yang Moon-seok invited a speed skating athlete who was a victim of grooming sexual violence as a witness to the parliamentary inspection, exposing the dark reality of the sports community. The victim testified about her painful experiences, highlighting the severity of the sexual violence problem that occurs within the sports community. In addition, Representative Son Sol pointed out the inadequacy of the Triathlon Federation's response to the sexual violence case involving a minor, urging relevant organizations to take responsibility. In response to these criticisms, Yoo Seung-min, President of the Korean Sport & Olympic Committee, pledged to eradicate sexual violence and misconduct against minors in the sports community and promised to implement strong measures to prevent recurrence. President Lee Jae-myung also stated that the government would spare no support and effort to resolve the chronic problems in the sports community.
