Thailand and Cambodia have officially begun implementing a ceasefire agreement aimed at ending their long-standing border dispute, marking a significant step towards improving relations between the two nations. Both countries will focus on easing tensions in the border region by withdrawing heavy weaponry and removing landmines from disputed areas.

This action follows the ceasefire agreement signed on October 26th. Reuters reported that both countries aim to stabilize the border region through the implementation of the agreement.

The withdrawal of heavy weaponry will proceed in three phases. The first phase will prioritize the removal of rocket weaponry, followed by artillery, tanks, and armored vehicles.

A Thai government official stated, "We will sequentially withdraw heavy weaponry according to the withdrawal plan agreed upon by both countries." The Cambodian Ministry of Defense announced that the first phase of heavy weapon removal is scheduled to begin on November 1st and will last for three weeks. The specific withdrawal schedule and procedures will be finalized through consultations between the military authorities of both countries.

In conjunction with the heavy weapon withdrawal, the removal of landmines in the border area, as stipulated in the ceasefire agreement, has also commenced. Mine removal is an essential measure to ensure the safety of the border area and guarantee the free movement of citizens of both countries.

Thailand has reportedly proposed landmine removal in 13 areas, while Cambodia has proposed it in one area. Both countries plan to establish a joint investigation and cooperation system to increase the efficiency of mine removal operations.

This ceasefire agreement is seen as an important step towards resolving the border dispute between Thailand and Cambodia that has lasted for many years. Since 2008, the two countries have been in conflict over the territory surrounding the Preah Vihear temple in the border area.

The Preah Vihear temple, built by the Khmer Empire in the 11th century, is located within Cambodian territory but is adjacent to the Thai border, making it a key source of the territorial dispute. UNESCO designated the Preah Vihear temple as a World Heritage Site in 2008.

In late July, Thailand and Cambodia engaged in a border clash that resulted in at least 48 deaths over five days. The clash escalated tensions in the border region and further strained relations between the two countries.

Malaysia played an active role in mediating the conflict between the two countries. Through Malaysian mediation, Thailand and Cambodia agreed to a ceasefire in late July and have since been negotiating to conclude a ceasefire agreement.

The Thai government has stated that it will not release prisoners or reopen blocked border crossings until Cambodia is confirmed to be complying with the ceasefire agreement. This demonstrates a clear commitment to normalizing relations through the full implementation of the ceasefire agreement.

The implementation of this ceasefire agreement is expected to be an important opportunity to resolve the long-standing conflict between Thailand and Cambodia and to develop relations between the two countries. Both countries plan to build stability and peace in the border region based on mutual trust and to expand economic and cultural exchanges.

Thailand and Cambodia have agreed to form a joint committee to regularly review the implementation of the ceasefire agreement and take necessary measures. The joint committee will consist of government and military officials from both countries and will be responsible for discussing and coordinating all matters related to the implementation of the ceasefire agreement.

Both countries will also actively promote the content and implementation of the ceasefire agreement to residents of the border area in order to alleviate their anxieties and create an atmosphere of cooperation.

The implementation of this ceasefire agreement between Thailand and Cambodia is expected to have a positive impact on the stability and peace of the Southeast Asian region. As members of ASEAN, the two countries will contribute to regional cooperation and development and fulfill their role as responsible members of the international community.

In the future, Thailand and Cambodia will conduct additional negotiations to resolve border issues. Both countries will work to narrow differences regarding border demarcation and territorial issues and to seek mutually acceptable solutions.

A Thai government official stated, "Through the implementation of this ceasefire agreement, we will fully normalize relations with Cambodia and create a future that benefits all citizens of both countries." A Cambodian government official also stated, "We will strengthen cooperation with Thailand to achieve peace and prosperity in the border region."

Both countries will build mutual trust and seek a fundamental solution to the border dispute through transparent and constructive dialogue. To this end, the two countries plan to utilize various methods, including joint research and investigations, expert exchanges, and the collection of resident opinions.

The implementation of this ceasefire agreement is not merely about stopping armed conflict, but an important first step towards building sustainable peace and cooperation between the two countries. It is hoped that Thailand and Cambodia can overcome past conflicts and create a future-oriented relationship through this opportunity.

Detailed information regarding the implementation of this ceasefire agreement can be found through the official announcements of the Thai and Cambodian governments. Both governments will transparently disclose relevant information and strive to help the public understand.
